 Review of the 2019 Election

The Australian Labor Party (ALP) saw arguably its best results of the 2019 election in the state of Victoria. It picked up two seats (Dunkley and Corangamite) previously held by the governing Liberal/National Coalition, and made significant gains in Melbourne’s inner eastern suburbs, traditionally safe territory for the Liberal Party. The biggest gains for the ALP came in the electorate of Higgins, previously held on comfortable margins by minister Kelly O’Dwyer, and before her, by former Treasurer Peter Costello.

Interestingly, the Coalition in turn made its biggest gains in the western suburbs, territory normally dominated by Labor. The biggest swing to the Coalition was in the newly-created seat of Fraser, formed in part from portions of the electorate of Maribyrnong, the seat of then Leader of the Opposition Bill Shorten.
